To send WhatsApp messages to customers (broadcasts, cart recovery, order updates, etc.), you need a valid customer phone number that includes the country code (e.g., +84912345678)
This article guides you through configuring Shopify Checkout to:
- Require or allow customers to enter their phone number
- Display an opt-in checkbox for SMS/WhatsApp marketing
- Ensure phone numbers are saved in the correct format so WASend can use them
Step 1: Log in to Shopify Admin
Go to https://admin.shopify.com and log in with your store owner account.
Step 2: Go to the Checkout settings
- In the bottom-left corner, click Settings (gear icon ⚙️)
- In the left-hand menu of the Settings page, click Checkout
Step 3: Configure customer contact methods
Scroll down to the Customer contact method section. You’ll see two options:

👉 Select "Phone number or email" and click Save.
Step 4: Require customers to enter a phone number at the shipping address
This is the most important step if you want to collect phone numbers for every order.
- Still on the Settings > Checkout page, scroll down to the Customer information section
- Find the " Shipping address phone number " field
- Select Required or Optional and click Save
